Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody...

I tried to read a month's worth of Broom Hilda with the wide-eyed innocence of a mentally-challenged adult.
Which may be the proper way to read any amount of Broom Hilda, but I digress...

That being said, I humbly present my nominee for the worst BH in the month of March:
Hilda's Hottt Date

Posted by Hello

My gripes:
1. It's not funny.
If the third panel, was say, Hilda sneaking around the bushes surrounding Brad Pitt's house, that would be funny. Or if in the second panel Gaylord said something like, "You're not going to sneak around the bushes surrounding Brad Pitt's house, again are you?", then that would be funny (even if the last panel was her at the Lincoln Memorial).

2. It's not timely.
The only possible excuse that I will accept for unfunny (note, not nonsensical, ref: Idol Minds as the DEVIL'S Playground ) is if it's topical or timely... i.e. discussing Christmas on 12/25 or being all GO USA!!! on 7/4...
According to my sources, this BH ran in mid-March. Not President's Day or Lincoln's Birthday or what have you. Random civic-mindedness does not a snicker make.

3. It's bordering on non-sensical.
Has Hilda's crushes on Presidents past been discussed before? Why, on this night, is she going to the Lincoln Memorial? Does the BH gang live inside the Beltway?

I am confused. Not amused.
And this is the worst BH in the month of March.

Oddly enough, now that you've posted it, it IS topical, as the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum opened today in Springfield, IL.

Could it be a pun on "liberty" (in panel 2)? Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty . . .

Oooh. and there's "conceived" in there too, which could be kind of dirty if you have a gutter brain (and I don't, FYI)

Of course there's another president with a famous "liberty," quote: Jefferson! Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I think Jefferson is totally hotter than Lincoln. And not only that, haven't there recently been rumblings that Lincoln was gay?? Jefferson so totally was NOT! So why did she go to Lincoln? Because she could sit on his lap, I guess.

She could also sit on FDR's lap at the FDR memorial, but that isn't so iconic.

This actually made my short list of "worst of" as well, so while my support is still with the lineup, this one is pretty bad, too.

I can't believe that it's a pun "liberty" and "conceived"... that's way too much of stretch for the BH readership.

The lineup strip, like the BC "idol hands" strip would be excellent contenders for the "rewrite this joke and make it funny this time" challenge, you know...

I think we need to start using the word "metahumor" to describe the process where your mind involuntarily and desperately applies your own joke to the comics to make them funny. As in, there was no pun intended in the Broom Hilda posted here, but Big Al found some metahumor in the strip.

And don't believe the Lincoln was gay hype. Although that would add some metahumor to this strip...

I think the "joke" (and I use that term VERRRRY loosely) is that you don't expect it to be Lincoln.

This doesn't work for several reasons:

1) Why Lincoln??? What the heck?? Like Emily says, does BH have an obsession with Presidents that we don't know about?

2) It's a sight gag. The joke is purely in the surprise of seeing Lincoln in the 3rd panel. But the 3rd panel is INCHES from the first panel. So, you see Lincoln as soon as you start reading. Unless you use your hands to cover up the last part of the strip when you are reading, which . . that's dumb. So, you already see the punchline before you start reading.

So in conclusion, I see what the joke is supposed to be, it's just not funny, and it doesn't make any sense. Same goes for the fire hydrant one. Yeah, OK, I "get it" but is it supposed to be funny? Because it's not.

Emily -- did you go on your vacation to DC? Did you try to sit on Lincoln's lap and they said no? You should write a letter to the editor and explain how Broom Hilda gave you a wrong impression and ruined your vacation.

What would have made this thing funny would have been the third panel showing BH getting shot at by the Capitol Police for going near the statue.

OK. If/when we go to the "make this strip funnier" contest, Mr./Ms. Anonymous above wins the honorary first prize.

Broom Hilda getting shot at by the Capitol Police?? I've been chuckling at this for several hours.

6:26 anonymous: No, I did not go to DC for my vacation. However, if you do like the cherry blossoms like I do, I have lots of pictures of them in my vacation photoblog.

Thumbs up!

That would be very silly though... akin to getting water safety tips from Mary Worth.
