One Year of Bad Comics
Well, folks, it was one year ago today that the Family Circus broke me. For years I had scoffed and rolled my eyes at the sad state of the funny pages. In early October 2004, the Family Circus printed a comic that was so inscrutable, so unfunny, and so baffling, that, after a month's consideration, I finally broke down and began my quest to get to the bottom of the (alleged) humor that passes for good family fun in the funnies. That inaugural post is here.
So, what have I learned over the past year? Well, nothing really. I discovered:
So, what have I learned over the past year? Well, nothing really. I discovered:
- That funny page marriages suck (and, um, not in a good way). Which I knew already.
- The Family Circus mom has some mad cool diet program.
- Men can't cook.
- The Forths aren't the world's greatest cat owners.
- Gil Thorpe is some whacked out dope shit.
- Technology is Difficult!
- Funky Winkerbean's Becky looks like the Wicked Witch of the West.
Favorite comic panels from the past year?
What have I really learned?
- That it is incredibly difficult to come up with something to say about the comics every day . . . or three times a week, which has become the norm. Sorry!
- That there are tons of like-minded comics haters out there. Thanks for all the comments and feedback. Most recently, John Norton (creator of the most awesome George) pointed out that Garfield's Jon may be gay (not that there's anything wrong with that). If Jim Davis cooperates, and does some Jon strips in the next few days, we may examine that further.
So I haven't gotten to the bottom of the crappy humor yet, but I'm working on it! Thank you to everyone who reads the blog. From time to time I've considered throwing in the towel, and out of nowhere comes an insightful, hilarious, or complimentary comment. Thanks much!

Mazel tov, Big Al!
I felt like throwing the towel in, in June. Then i recently restarted my "editited comics." Keep doing a great job!
Congrats on your bloggoversary!
You might already know this, but you can access the current Family Circus at the Houston Chronicle's Comics Page
*Chuckle* I had meant to add to the "things I learned this year" list: how to access comics online in a timely fashion!
Thanks for the Chronicle link. I've been using the Seattle Times and Post-Intelligencer. They've got most of them, too.
Yes, add me to the list of your congratuees. Although instead i sohould curse you for making reading the "funnies" a part of my daily routine again. That's 5 minutes a day that I'll never get back.
Just pointing out the "weinerworld" panel made my day. That's the filthiest line in a family comedy since June asked Ward if he wasn't awfully hard on the Beaver last night.
Garfield was my favorite comic strip when I was young. My question is, was Garfield legitimately pretty funny about 15 years ago, or has it always been this bad and I was just gleeful in my ignorance? Honestly I think that, looking back on Garfield strips circa 1990, Garfield used to be fairly amusing. I think Davis just got jaded a few years after that and now has to resort to GAY STORYLINES to boost ratings.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. *cough*
Anyway, yes, gratz on the bloggoversary. Did you invite Blondie and Dagwood?
